tuna chasing halfbeaks

Intel

The full moon cycle this past weekend has brought with it a change to the offshore front and the arrival of smaller recreational size bluefin to Massachusetts.  Both East of Chatham and Stellwagen has started to see the first surface feeds of the year as the fish are starting to key in on halfbeaks.   The old BC buoy has been showing signs of life as well as middleback and the east side of stellwagen for fish in the 100-200lb range.

Pogie schools on the south shore have scattered with the arrival of Bluefish over the past week but they are still around.

Mackeral are making their way back south and are thick again on the North Shore and off Scituates inshore ledges.

Inshore Intel

With a few ticks away from September the fall run is definantly starting regardless of how much we fight it.

Plymouth Bay is lit up with school sized bass from saquish rip all the way down into warren's cove.  The fish are feeding on peanut bunker and are fast moving and hard to catch using artificials.  Small tins to match the hatch are working best.  The North River is also loaded with schoolies feeding on the small bait.

30lb class stripers are being caught in Boston harbor and surronding island on the pogy schools using snag and drop technique.

Offshore Intel

Large tuna that typically come in during the fall have arrived as evidenced by Cape Star Chaters 1130lb monster caught tuesday 8/28. Middle bank has picked up recently and has produced a number of giants over the past week.  Boats are starting to fish falls spots in cape cod bay as the whiting have moved in earlier then usual with the high water temperatures this year.

The eastern edge of stellwagen is holding bait and with it smaller bluefin that are being target by run and gun and trolling fleet.

Even with the dip in water temps of some 5 degrees the shark fishing on the bank is still good to great.  Plenty of blues and an uptick in Threshers are available providing boats with action in the deeper waters towards the eastern edge.

Haddock fishing is really good right now which is not atypical but the fish are still in "shallower" water and the biomass can be found in the areas around the barge and rockpiles out in 200ft of water east of middlebank.
