Two-week Gulf of Maine cod season to open September (15-30) 2019

US Bluefin Fishery closed until September 1st

Please note the following updates from NMFS

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna General Category Fishery for June–August Subquota Period is closed effective Friday August 9th at 11:30pm.

Fishermen aboard vessels permitted in the Atlantic tunas General and Atlantic HMS Charter/Headboat categories may not retain, possess, or land large medium or giant Atlantic bluefin tuna after 11:30 p.m. on August 9, 2019.

Tuna Grading Tips

With market conditions continueing to be difficult and the moratorium by the buys extended through wednesday 7/31, Uber Tuna recently provided some guidance on how to tell if a fish will have quality fat before harvesting.  As only the highest quality fish are getting reasonable prices there is an opportunity to cull fish that will not return value.  Not intended to be a go to guide to harvesting fish but interesting enought that i wanted to share.

Voluntary Tuna Closure by Buyers

Please note there is currently a moratorium on Tuna purchases by all buyers due to the record low market conditions.  The preference from most commercial fisherman and the buyers is to retain the quota for when the market conditions get better and there are more quality fish in our area.  Please plan ahead before harvesting a fish over the next coming weeks.

Change to Bluefin Tuna General Category Daily Retention Limit

Take note that effective July 11, 2019 Bluefin Tuna bag limit will be reduced from 3 per day to 1 per day, and likely be in place through the August 31st quota subperiod.
