Bluefin Tuna General Category Fishery to Reopen for Two Days to fill October subquota

As had been rumored the bluefin fishery will reopen for two days, effective 12:30 a.m., October 15 through 11:30 p.m., October 16, 2018.

As of October 11, 2018, reported data show that the General category landed 81.8 mt before closing. This represents 64 percent of the adjusted October through November subquota. NOAA Fisheries has determined that reopening the General category fishery for two days is appropriate given the remaining 45.4 mt subquota.

Bluefin Tuna season possibly reopening in October

NMFS is considering reopening fishing for Bluefin Tuna in October. ICAAT finalized a rule increase in the US bluefin quota from 1,058.79 to 1,247.86 metric tons (mt), the level recommended for 2018 through 2020 by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) at its 2017 annual meeting. After the tally for the Oct/Nov subquoata period with the rule increase there is approximately 50mt still available forperiod. What to do with a deceased whale that washes ashore!!!

As has been widely reported, on Monday August 20th a decease 55ft finback whale washed onto Duxbury beach after strong northeast winds the day before.  According to the New England aquarium the whale had been known to be dead at least three days prior and had been spotted in the middle of cape cod bay upwards of 10 miles from where it washed ashore.  This left Duxbury officials with a problem of how to remove 29 tons (~58k lbs) of dead animal.

Cape Cod Striper fishing during the new moon in June

The annual striped bass migration begins in the early spring in their breeding grounds of either Chesapeake Bay, Delawre or the Hudson River. After their spring spawn the fish move back into saltwater and start their migration north to feed.  By late May and early June the fish make it to Massachusetts waters starting with the smaller school sized fish and follwed by larger keeper size later in the month.
